A WiSA speaker is a powered speaker with a built-in amplifier and a WiSA receiver module that receives uncompressed multichannel audio from a WiSA transmitter over a dedicated 5 GHz wireless link. The usual chain of an AV receiver and speaker cables is replaced by a transmitter and a set of speakers, each plugged into a wall outlet.

WiSA stands for Wireless Speaker and Audio Association, a consortium of consumer electronics manufacturers, retailers, and chip developers that maintains the interoperability standard. The technology behind it comes from WiSA Technologies, now part of Datavault AI.

No company sells speakers under the WiSA name. The technology is licensed to audio brands, so you buy a Platin, Buchardt, Bang & Olufsen, or Lithe Audio speaker that has a WiSA module built in.

The difference between a Bluetooth and a Wi-Fi speaker lies in what gets transmitted. Bluetooth compresses the signal and adds enough delay to break lip-sync in video. WiSA sends the audio uncompressed and locks all speakers in the room to the same clock, which is why it works for movies and games rather than for background music alone.

Three separate technologies now ship under the WiSA name, and they differ in audio quality, channel count, and intended product category.

WiSA HT

WiSA HT is the original home theater implementation, and the one most certified speakers use. It carries up to eight channels of uncompressed 24-bit audio at 48 or 96 kHz. Latency is 2.6 ms at 96 kHz and 5.2 ms at 48 kHz, low enough that no lip-sync offset is visible. Speakers stay synchronized to within roughly one microsecond of each other.

WiSA E

WiSA E is a software implementation that runs on standard mass-market Wi-Fi chipsets instead of a dedicated hardware module. It transmits and receives uncompressed 16- or 24-bit 48 kHz audio over a 5 GHz network it creates, and it supports Dolby Atmos configurations. Because it does not require custom silicon, manufacturers can add it to TVs, projectors, set-top boxes, and gaming hardware at lower cost.

WiSA DS

WiSA DS targets soundbars specifically. It powers four channels of surround and up-firing height audio plus a subwoofer channel from a single transmitter module inside the bar. Platin's Milan 5.1.4 was the first system built on it.

All three operate in the 5 GHz U-NII band on a private network the transmitter creates, separate from your home Wi-Fi. That separation is why WiSA holds up when the household is streaming video on three other devices.

WiSA speakers cannot connect to a TV on their own. Every system needs a transmitter, and there are three ways to get one.

A standalone transmitterΒ 

The WiSA SoundSend is the most common option in the US. It plugs into a TV via HDMI ARC or eARC (optical also works), decodes the audio, and sends up to 8 channels of uncompressed 24-bit, 48/96 kHz sound to WiSA-certified speakers, supporting up to 11 connected speakers. It handles Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos, but it does not decode DTS formats. SoundSend launched at an MSRP of $179; check current pricing before you buy.

A WiSA-ready TVΒ 

Some LG and Hisense models accept a USB WiSA transmitter and expose speaker controls in the TV's own menu. LG's OLED C2, G2, and Z2 series, along with the QNED90 and QNED99 lines, received SoundSend certification, and Hisense's U7K and U8K ULED models were also certified. Certification announcements have slowed since 2023, so verify the status of any current-year TV before you plan around it.

A hub with inputsΒ 

Platin's Stereo Hub HT and Surround Hub accept multiple sources and add streaming, which suits people running a turntable or console alongside the TV.

Product labels matter here, and three of them get confused:

  • WiSA HT Certified Interoperable means the product has passed testing and works out of the box with certified gear from any other member brand.
  • WiSA Ready means the device accepts a WiSA transmitter but does not include one.
  • WiSA Enabled or plain WiSA HT, means the product uses the technology inside a closed system. The Enclave CineHub, for example, only pairs with Enclave-branded speakers.

One practical limit is worth planning for before you buy anything. WiSA removes the speaker cable and nothing else. Every speaker still needs its own power outlet, so a 5.1 layout means six outlets or six extension runs, and rear surrounds may need power on the far side of the room. The indoor range is around 30 feet, which covers most living rooms but not a large open-plan space with the sofa at one end.

The certified speaker roster covers roughly a dozen brands, though only part of it is easy to buy through American retail.

Platin Audio dominates the accessible end. Its Monaco and Milan systems ship as complete packages, with the SoundSend transmitter included, and are sold through Best Buy, Amazon, and B&H. The Monaco 5.1.2, which adds up-firing Atmos drivers to the front satellites, carries a $1,499 MSRP. The Milan 5.1.4 soundbar package, bundling the bar, surrounds, and a subwoofer, launched at $799.

Enclave Audio sells the CineHome II and THX-certified CineHome PRO as all-in-one 5.1 bundles. Both are closed systems tied to the Enclave hub.

Bang & Olufsen has carried WiSA inside its Beolab line for years, including the Beolab 18, 19, 20, 50, and 90. These sit at a different price tier entirely and are typically installed rather than bought off a shelf.

Buchardt Audio ships the A500 and A700 active speakers, plus the Anniversary 10, directly to customers, with WiSA connectivity available when paired with a compatible hub. Buying means ordering from Denmark.

System Audio offers the broadest catalog of individual WiSA speakers under the Silverback name, covering bookshelf, on-wall, floorstanding, center, and subwoofer positions. That range makes it the most flexible option for building a system position by position, rather than buying a kit.

Dynaudio includes WiSA in its Focus 10, Focus 30, and Focus 50 active speakers, available through US dealers.

Lithe Audio covers in-ceiling and outdoor installation, including a 5.1 in-ceiling surround kit and a 5.1.2 Atmos package. Home Controls is one of the few US retailers stocking the full Lithe Audio WiSA range.

Savant, Piega, Goldmund, Electrocompaniet, Mesanovic and Pylon Audio round out the certified list, mostly through custom installation channels rather than consumer retail.

Two names on WiSA's own product page deserve caution. Klipsch's Reference Wireless series (RW-51M, RW-34C, RW-100SW) and Axiim's LINK bundles were among the earliest certified products, and both are effectively legacy. Klipsch has not extended the line, and the Axiim transmitters are documented as compatible with LG models from 2019 to 2021. Treat both as used-market purchases.

The build order runs from the transmitter outward because the transmitter determines how many channels the system can carry and which formats it can decode.

Step 1: Pick the transmitterΒ 

Check whether your TV is SoundSend certified or WiSA-ready. If it is neither, a SoundSend on the HDMI eARC port covers most setups. Confirm eARC specifically if you want Dolby TrueHD or Atmos in TrueHD, since ARC alone will not pass those.

Step 2: Add the front pairΒ 

Two speakers give you a working stereo system that already handles TV audio better than most built-in panels. Everything after this point is expansion.

Step 3: Add the center and subwooferΒ 

The center channel carries dialogue, and it is the single upgrade most people notice immediately on movies and streaming series.

Step 4: Add rear surroundsΒ 

A transmitter recognizes new speakers when they are powered on and assigned a position in the app, so expansion does not require reconfiguring the whole system.

Step 5: Add height channels for AtmosΒ 

Two options exist: front speakers with up-firing drivers or in-ceiling speakers. SoundSend decodes Atmos up to a 5.1.2 layout.

Mixing brands is technically supported across certified interoperable products and works. The catch is tonal: a Klipsch center paired with System Audio surrounds will hand off between channels audibly, because the two are voiced differently. Matching brands across the front three channels solves most of it.

WiSA carries four constraints that catch buyers after purchase.

It is not a multiroom systemΒ 

The transmitter creates a point-to-point network for one room. Sending different music to the kitchen and the bedroom is what Sonos, HEOS, and BluOS do, and WiSA does not compete there.

Speakers do not accept Bluetooth or AirPlay directlyΒ 

Audio has to reach the transmitter first. Streaming directly from a phone to WiSA speakers is not possible, since the transmitter runs its own network separate from the home Wi-Fi. Streaming happens through TV apps or through a hub with built-in streaming.

Every speaker needs a power outletΒ 

Six components in a 5.1 system mean six outlets, and rear positions often mean running power where there is none.

Entry cost sits above soundbar territoryΒ 

Each speaker has its own amplifier and wireless receiver, which sets a floor on the price. A complete Atmos package starts at around $800 for a soundbar-based system and $1,500 for a separates system.

There is a fifth consideration, and it concerns the platform rather than the hardware. WiSA Technologies renamed itself Datavault AI in February 2025, moved to the Nasdaq ticker DVLT, and reorganized into Data Science and Acoustic Science divisions. WiSA now sits inside Acoustic Science alongside the ADIO and Sumerian brands, licensed to customers across sports, venues, automotive and other markets. The company's public messaging has shifted heavily toward data monetization and Web 3.0, which raises a reasonable question about long-term investment in consumer home audio. The standard is functioning, certified products continue to ship, and existing systems work independently of corporate strategy. Buyers planning to expand a system over five years should weigh that anyway.

Choose WiSA when the goal is a discrete multichannel home theater and the room cannot take speaker wire. Choose Sonos when whole-home audio matters more than uncompressed multichannel. Choose a soundbar kit when budget is the binding constraint and one wire from the TV is acceptable.

Are WiSA speakers really wireless?

Only the audio signal is wireless. Every speaker requires its own mains power connection, so a 5.1 system needs six power outlets. WiSA eliminates the speaker cable and the AV receiver, not the power cords.

Can I mix WiSA speakers from different brands?

Yes, if every product carries the WiSA HT Certified Interoperable label. Products labeled only WiSA HT or WiSA Enabled may run closed systems that pair exclusively with the manufacturer's own gear. Mixing brands works technically, though speakers voiced differently will not blend perfectly across channels.

Do I need a WiSA-ready TV?

Who Should Buy WiSA Speakers

WiSA makes sense in three situations, and it is the wrong choice in a fourth.

Buy it if you want real multichannel surround in a room you cannot wire. A rental, a finished basement, a room with concrete floors: these are the cases where the technology earns its price premium over a soundbar.

Buy it if you want to expand gradually. Starting with a stereo pair and adding a center, a subwoofer, and rears over a couple of years works cleanly, since the transmitter recognizes speakers as they are added.

Buy it if you already own a compatible TV. LG and Hisense owners with certified models get the smoothest setup and on-screen control.

Skip it if you want whole-home audio. WiSA handles one room at a time. Multiroom streaming across a house calls for a different platform, and no amount of WiSA hardware will fill that gap.
